What is Tenmoku pottery?

Tenmoku (天目) is the Japanese name for Jian Zhan tea bowls originating from Song Dynasty China (960-1279). The name came from Japanese monks who brought these bowls from China's Tianmu Mountain. Each piece is fired at 1300°C+ producing unique crystalline glaze patterns — oil spot, hare's fur, and rainbow — that are never repeated.

What makes Tenmoku glaze unique?

Tenmoku glaze is unique because the crystalline patterns form naturally during high-temperature firing through iron crystallization. No two pieces are ever identical. The three main patterns are oil spot (silver/gold droplets), hare's fur (fur-like streaks), and yaobian/rainbow (extremely rare iridescent coloring). Each is a one-of-a-kind work of art.

How do you care for Tenmoku teaware?
