Buying guide

How to choose Chinese oolong tea

Choose oolong by oxidation, roast level, origin, aroma, and how many infusions you want from the leaves. Light oolong feels floral and bright; roasted oolong is deeper, warmer, and better for slow Gongfu sessions.

Best for

Gongfu brewing, layered aroma, repeat infusions, and drinkers moving beyond green or black tea.

What to check

Oxidation level, roast, cultivar or region, leaf shape, aroma, and whether the tea suits a gaiwan or Yixing pot.

Brew

Use hotter water than green tea and brief repeated steeps, then extend as the leaves open.

Pair with

A gaiwan for tasting, or a dedicated Yixing teapot once you know the oolong style you love.

Choose the oolong first

Start with the tea below. Add a gaiwan only when the buyer needs a simple brewing vessel.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is Tie Guan Yin oolong tea?
Tie Guan Yin (Iron Goddess of Mercy) is one of China's most famous oolong teas, originating from Anxi, Fujian Province. It is known for its floral orchid aroma, smooth body, and lingering sweet aftertaste. It can be steeped 7-10 times.
How is oolong tea different from green or black tea?
Oolong tea is partially oxidized (15-85%), sitting between green tea (unoxidized) and black tea (fully oxidized). This gives oolong an incredibly diverse range of flavors — from light and floral to rich and roasted, depending on the oxidation level.
How should I brew oolong tea?
For light floral oolong, start around 185-195°F with short infusions. For medium roasted oolong, use about 195-205°F. For darker roasted or heavily oxidized oolong, near-boiling water works well. Gongfu brewing usually uses brief repeated steeps and adjusts by taste.
What is the best teapot for oolong tea?
Yixing purple clay teapots are considered ideal for oolong tea. The porous clay absorbs tea oils and enhances flavor over time. A dedicated Yixing pot for oolong will develop a rich seasoning. Gaiwans also work well for lighter oolongs like Tie Guan Yin.
