Wuyi Rougui Rock Tea – A Spicy Elegance from the Cliffs

Crafted in the legendary Wuyi Mountains, this yancha embodies the bold fragrance and layered sweetness of true Rougui tea, produced in small batches using traditional roasting techniques.

Origin & Aroma

Rougui, meaning “cassia bark” in Chinese, earns its name from its naturally sweet, cinnamon-like aroma. Grown in the rocky crevices of Wuyi Mountain—a UNESCO World Heritage site—this tea thrives in mineral-rich soil and misty air, absorbing the essence of the mountain itself.

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: Warm, spicy cinnamon layered with hints of wood and roasted sweetness
  • Liquor: Bright amber-orange color with brilliant clarity
  • Mouthfeel: Smooth, mellow, slightly brisk finish with a long aftertaste
  • Leaf base: Tender, glossy, twisted leaves with red edges, soft and plump after brewing

Craftsmanship

This Rougui is produced using the traditional charcoal roasting method—meticulously dried and roasted over time to bring out its signature depth and stability in flavor. The leaves are handpicked and processed in small batches to ensure consistency.

Brewing Guide

Recommended Brewing (Gaiwan)

  • Tea Amount: 8.3g
  • Water Volume: 120ml
  • Water Temperature: 100°C
  1. Warm the cup: Pour hot water 1/3 full into the gaiwan, swirl gently, then discard.
  2. Rinse the tea: Add tea leaves, pour water, and immediately pour out the rinse.
  3. Steep: Use a high pour to release aroma. First 3 steeps: flash infusions; later steeps: increase steeping time gradually.
  4. Serve: Pour into small cups. Fill to 70% for optimal appreciation of aroma and flavor.

Why Choose This Rougui?

  • Authentic Origin: Hand-harvested in 2024 from Wuyi’s rocky terroir
  • Traditional Roasting: Charcoal roasted with soft cinnamon tones and sweet mineral finish
  • Strong Aftertaste: Lingering hui gan (returning sweetness) after each sip

Before you buy

Before you buy this gaiwan

A gaiwan is one of the most direct Gongfu brewing vessels. It works best if you want clear leaf control, open aroma, and a very readable brew.

Good fit if

You want one neutral vessel for several tea styles and more control over leaf opening and steep timing.

Check

Capacity, wall thickness, bowl shape, lid grip, and whether porcelain, glass, or clay suits your tea habits.

How to use

Start with smaller leaf amounts, hold the lid slightly open, and pour into a fairness pitcher or cups with a steady hand.

Care

Rinse after each session. Porcelain and glazed gaiwans are usually the easiest to keep neutral and clean.
