Discover Jian Zhan Tenmoku tea cups: handcrafted ceramic masterpieces born in the legendary kilns of the Song dynasty, where every piece is one of a kind.
What Is a Jian Zhan Tea Cup?
The Jian Zhan tea cup (建盏), also known as Tenmoku, is a handcrafted ceramic originating from Jianyang county in Fujian Province, China. Fired at over 1300°C, each cup develops unique crystalline patterns during firing, so no two pieces are exactly alike.
The Fascinating History of Jian Zhan
During the Song dynasty (960–1279), Jian Zhan cups were considered among the most precious vessels for drinking tea. Emperor Huizong himself mentioned them in his treatise on tea. These dark bowls were used in tea competitions (dou cha 斗茶), where the dark color set off the white foam of whisked tea.
After centuries of obscurity, the production techniques were rediscovered in the 1980s, and Jian Zhan cups are now enjoying a global revival.
Signature Patterns
- Oil spots (油滴, Youdai): Silvery or golden droplets on a black background — the most iconic pattern
- Hare's fur (兔毫, Tuhao): Fine parallel streaks resembling the coat of a hare
- Aurora: Iridescent rainbow reflections that shift with the angle of the light
- Obsidian: A deep black glaze with a subtle metallic sheen
Why Drink Tea from a Jian Zhan?
1. A Different Drinking Experience
Many tea lovers say their tea tastes rounder and smoother when brewed in a Jian Zhan cup.
2. Heat Retention
The thick walls of a Jian Zhan hold heat longer than a thin porcelain cup, allowing you to savor your tea for longer.
3. The Art of Patina (养盏)
With regular use, the glaze of your Jian Zhan develops a unique patina — the reflections deepen and new shades appear over time. It is a companion that ages with you.
How to Choose Your First Jian Zhan?
| Use | Recommended pattern | Capacity |
