Why a gaiwan

A gaiwan is the most versatile Gongfu brewing vessel. The open bowl lets you see and smell the leaves, the lid holds them back as you pour, and glazed porcelain does not absorb flavor, so one gaiwan works for green, white, oolong, black and pu-erh tea. The lid can rest at any angle on the rim, and the flared rim stays cooler so you can hold it while pouring.

Which size should I choose?

The 120 ml classic gaiwan suits one or two people and is easier to handle if you are new to gaiwans. The 170 ml Yishan gaiwan has a wider, rounder bowl that gives leaves more room and serves two to four people.

What does the lotus scroll pattern mean?

Lotus scroll, or chan zhi lian, links lotus flowers with endless winding vines. It is a traditional Chinese symbol of continuity and good fortune, which also makes the gift-box versions a thoughtful present.

Care

Rinse with warm water after each use and dry before storing. Avoid sudden hot-to-cold temperature changes. Hand washing is recommended to protect the pattern.

Frequently asked questions

Is a gaiwan hard to use?

It takes a few tries. Fill it about three-quarters full, hold the rim with your thumb and middle finger, keep the lid slightly open with your index finger and pour in one smooth motion.

Does it come with cups?

No. This listing is the gaiwan (bowl, lid and saucer) only. Pair it with small tasting cups and a fairness pitcher, or choose one of our gaiwan travel tea sets.

What is the difference between the Yishan and Ru glaze options?

Both are the same 170 ml Yishan shape. The Ru glaze version has a softer, satin glaze that can develop fine crackle lines with use.

Before you buy

Before you buy this gaiwan

A gaiwan is one of the most direct Gongfu brewing vessels. It works best if you want clear leaf control, open aroma, and a very readable brew.

Good fit if

You want one neutral vessel for several tea styles and more control over leaf opening and steep timing.

Check

Capacity, wall thickness, bowl shape, lid grip, and whether porcelain, glass, or clay suits your tea habits.

How to use

Start with smaller leaf amounts, hold the lid slightly open, and pour into a fairness pitcher or cups with a steady hand.

Care

Rinse after each session. Porcelain and glazed gaiwans are usually the easiest to keep neutral and clean.
