How the quick-brew (kuaike) cup works

A kuaike cup is a pot and cup in one: the lower vessel holds the brewed tea and the lid or inner basket holds the leaves. Brew, strain, then pour into the small cups. After brewing, the cups stack on or inside the main vessel so the whole set packs into the case. Capacities are measured at about 80% full, which is what you actually pour.

What is coarse stoneware?

Coarse pottery (cu tao) is made from a clay body with more sand and iron than fine porcelain. It feels slightly gritty in the hand and has a quiet, earthy look. The bases are left unglazed, which is normal for this style. It is well suited to roasted oolong, dark tea and black tea.

Who it is for

This set serves one to three people. Pack it for the office, a hotel room, a road trip, a picnic or a campsite, or give it as a tea gift to someone who travels often. Bring your own loose leaf tea and hot water.

Care

Rinse every piece with warm water after use and let them dry completely before packing them into the case, so the case stays fresh. Avoid sudden hot-to-cold temperature changes, and hand wash to protect the decoration. Wash with plain water only; soap can be absorbed by the unglazed clay.

Frequently asked questions

How many cups does one brew fill?

The largest vessel holds about 130 ml and each cup about 40 ml, so one brew fills roughly 3 cups. Gongfu-style tea is brewed in several short rounds, so the set easily serves one to three people.

Does the travel case protect the cups?

Yes. The pieces stack together and fit inside the padded case, which keeps them from knocking against each other in a bag or suitcase.
