How to brew with the gaiwan

Add leaves to the gaiwan, pour in hot water and cover. To serve, tilt the lid slightly to hold back the leaves and pour through the gap into the cups. The flared rim stays cooler than the bowl, so hold the gaiwan by the rim and lid knob.

What is fencai (famille rose)?

Fencai, known in the West as famille rose, is a soft, opaque overglaze palette developed in the Qing dynasty. Colors are applied over a fired white glaze and fired again at a lower temperature, which gives pinks, blues and greens a gentle, powdery tone.

Who it is for

This gaiwan brews for two to three people per infusion. It suits beginners learning Gongfu tea and experienced drinkers who want a neutral vessel for oolong, green, white and black teas, and it makes a thoughtful gift for a tea lover. Pair it with small tasting cups and a fairness pitcher.

Care

Rinse the gaiwan with warm water after use and let it dry before storing. Avoid sudden hot-to-cold temperature changes, and hand wash to protect the glaze and decoration.

Frequently asked questions

Is a gaiwan hard to use?

It takes a few tries. Fill it about three-quarters full, hold the rim with your thumb and middle finger, keep the lid slightly open with your index finger and pour in one smooth motion. The flared rim stays cooler than the bowl.

Does it come with cups?

No. This listing is the gaiwan only (see the photos and option for whether a saucer is included). Pair it with small tasting cups and a fairness pitcher.

Before you buy

Before you buy this gaiwan

A gaiwan is one of the most direct Gongfu brewing vessels. It works best if you want clear leaf control, open aroma, and a very readable brew.

Good fit if

You want one neutral vessel for several tea styles and more control over leaf opening and steep timing.

Check

Capacity, wall thickness, bowl shape, lid grip, and whether porcelain, glass, or clay suits your tea habits.

How to use

Start with smaller leaf amounts, hold the lid slightly open, and pour into a fairness pitcher or cups with a steady hand.

Care

Rinse after each session. Porcelain and glazed gaiwans are usually the easiest to keep neutral and clean.
