Good fit if
You want one neutral vessel for several tea styles and more control over leaf opening and steep timing.
A three-piece (sancai) gaiwan decorated in soft famille rose colors, in a daily 175 ml size or a larger 225 ml size. Each gaiwan comes as bowl, lid and saucer, made from kaolin porcelain with a pale glaze and fencai painting.
| Piece | Size | Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Large gaiwan | 4.6 in diameter × 4.3 in H (11.8 × 11 cm) | about 225 ml / 7.6 US fl oz |
| Standard gaiwan | 4.3 in diameter × 3.7 in H (10.8 × 9.5 cm) | about 175 ml / 5.9 US fl oz |
Measurements are taken by hand from the supplier's specification and may vary slightly.
Add leaves to the gaiwan, pour in hot water and cover. To serve, tilt the lid slightly to hold back the leaves and pour through the gap into the cups. The flared rim stays cooler than the bowl, so hold the gaiwan by the rim and lid knob.
Fencai, known in the West as famille rose, is a soft, opaque overglaze palette developed in the Qing dynasty. Colors are applied over a fired white glaze and fired again at a lower temperature, which gives pinks, blues and greens a gentle, powdery tone.
This gaiwan brews for two to four people per infusion. It suits beginners learning Gongfu tea and experienced drinkers who want a neutral vessel for oolong, green, white and black teas, and it makes a thoughtful gift for a tea lover. Pair it with small tasting cups and a fairness pitcher.
Rinse the gaiwan with warm water after use and let it dry before storing. Avoid sudden hot-to-cold temperature changes, and hand wash to protect the glaze and decoration.
The 175 ml size suits one to three people and is easier to hold. The 225 ml size gives the leaves more room and serves three to four people per round.
It takes a few tries. Fill it about three-quarters full, hold the rim with your thumb and middle finger, keep the lid slightly open with your index finger and pour in one smooth motion. The flared rim stays cooler than the bowl.
No. This listing is the gaiwan only (see the photos and option for whether a saucer is included). Pair it with small tasting cups and a fairness pitcher.

Before you buy
A gaiwan is one of the most direct Gongfu brewing vessels. It works best if you want clear leaf control, open aroma, and a very readable brew.
You want one neutral vessel for several tea styles and more control over leaf opening and steep timing.
Capacity, wall thickness, bowl shape, lid grip, and whether porcelain, glass, or clay suits your tea habits.
Start with smaller leaf amounts, hold the lid slightly open, and pour into a fairness pitcher or cups with a steady hand.
Rinse after each session. Porcelain and glazed gaiwans are usually the easiest to keep neutral and clean.
