Dimensions and capacity

Piece Size Capacity
Straight gaiwan (brimful 210 ml) 3.8 in diameter × 3.9 in H (9.7 × 10 cm) about 180 ml / 6.1 US fl oz

Measurements are taken by hand from the supplier's specification and may vary slightly.

How to brew with the gaiwan

Add leaves to the gaiwan, pour in hot water and cover. To serve, tilt the lid slightly to hold back the leaves and pour through the gap into the cups. The flared rim stays cooler than the bowl, so hold the gaiwan by the rim and lid knob. Capacities in the table are practical brewing volumes; brimful capacity is a little higher.

What is Ru glaze?

Ru glaze is a soft, satin glaze inspired by Song dynasty Ru ware, usually in pale sky-blue, celadon or cream tones. Fine crackle lines can appear in the glaze over time as tea seeps in, so the surface slowly changes with use. This is a normal feature of the glaze, not a defect.

Who it is for

This gaiwan brews for two to three people per infusion. It suits beginners learning Gongfu tea and experienced drinkers who want a neutral vessel for oolong, green, white and black teas, and it makes a thoughtful gift for a tea lover. Pair it with small tasting cups and a fairness pitcher.

Care

Rinse the gaiwan with warm water after use and let it dry before storing. Avoid sudden hot-to-cold temperature changes, and hand wash to protect the glaze and decoration.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the shapes?

The straight gaiwan is taller with near-vertical sides and holds more. The flared gaiwan has an outward-turned rim that is easier on the fingers when pouring.

Is a gaiwan hard to use?

It takes a few tries. Fill it about three-quarters full, hold the rim with your thumb and middle finger, keep the lid slightly open with your index finger and pour in one smooth motion. The flared rim stays cooler than the bowl.

Does it come with cups?

No. This listing is the gaiwan only (see the photos and option for whether a saucer is included). Pair it with small tasting cups and a fairness pitcher.

Before you buy

Before you buy this gaiwan

A gaiwan is one of the most direct Gongfu brewing vessels. It works best if you want clear leaf control, open aroma, and a very readable brew.

Good fit if

You want one neutral vessel for several tea styles and more control over leaf opening and steep timing.

Check

Capacity, wall thickness, bowl shape, lid grip, and whether porcelain, glass, or clay suits your tea habits.

How to use

Start with smaller leaf amounts, hold the lid slightly open, and pour into a fairness pitcher or cups with a steady hand.

Care

Rinse after each session. Porcelain and glazed gaiwans are usually the easiest to keep neutral and clean.
