How to brew with the gaiwan

Add leaves to the gaiwan, pour in hot water and cover. To serve, tilt the lid slightly to hold back the leaves and pour through the gap into the cups. The flared rim stays cooler than the bowl, so hold the gaiwan by the rim and lid knob. The strainer sits on the pitcher, so leaves are caught as you pour from the brewing cup.

What is Dehua white porcelain?

Dehua in Fujian province has made white porcelain for centuries and is known for bright, milky-white glazes. The dense, glassy body does not hold on to aromas, so it shows the true color and scent of the tea. That makes it a good neutral choice for green, white, oolong and light black teas.

Who it is for

This set serves one to three people. Pack it for the office, a hotel room, a road trip, a picnic or a campsite, or give it as a tea gift to someone who travels often. Bring your own loose leaf tea and hot water.

Care

Rinse every piece with warm water after use and let them dry completely before packing them into the case, so the case stays fresh. Avoid sudden hot-to-cold temperature changes, and hand wash to protect the decoration.

Frequently asked questions

Is the jade rabbit a seasonal design?

The jade rabbit is the moon rabbit of Chinese folklore, linked with the Mid-Autumn Festival, but the design works all year.

How many cups does one brew fill?

The largest vessel holds about 180 ml and each cup about 35 ml, so one brew fills roughly 5 cups. Gongfu-style tea is brewed in several short rounds, so the set easily serves one to three people.

Does the travel case protect the cups?

Yes. The pieces stack together and fit inside the padded case, which keeps them from knocking against each other in a bag or suitcase.

Before you buy

Before you buy this gaiwan

A gaiwan is one of the most direct Gongfu brewing vessels. It works best if you want clear leaf control, open aroma, and a very readable brew.

Good fit if

You want one neutral vessel for several tea styles and more control over leaf opening and steep timing.

Check

Capacity, wall thickness, bowl shape, lid grip, and whether porcelain, glass, or clay suits your tea habits.

How to use

Start with smaller leaf amounts, hold the lid slightly open, and pour into a fairness pitcher or cups with a steady hand.

Care

Rinse after each session. Porcelain and glazed gaiwans are usually the easiest to keep neutral and clean.
