How to brew with the gaiwan

Add leaves to the gaiwan, pour in hot water and cover. To serve, tilt the lid slightly to hold back the leaves and pour through the gap into the cups. The flared rim stays cooler than the bowl, so hold the gaiwan by the rim and lid knob. The filter holes run all the way around the lid, so it strains in any direction without lining it up.

What is purple clay (zisha)?

Purple clay, or zisha, is a dark, iron-rich clay used for Chinese teaware. It is slightly porous and gives a matte, stony surface. Many purple clay travel sets, including this one, carry a heat-reactive painted motif that brightens when hot water warms the pot.

Who it is for

This set serves one to two people. Pack it for the office, a hotel room, a road trip, a picnic or a campsite, or give it as a tea gift to someone who travels often. Bring your own loose leaf tea and hot water.

Care

Rinse every piece with warm water after use and let them dry completely before packing them into the case, so the case stays fresh. Avoid sudden hot-to-cold temperature changes, and hand wash to protect the decoration. Wash with plain water only; soap can be absorbed by the unglazed clay.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Heart Sutra?

The Heart Sutra is a short Buddhist text that is often written in calligraphy on teaware and in tea rooms as a reminder to slow down.

How many cups does one brew fill?

The largest vessel holds about 210 ml and each cup about 50 ml, so one brew fills roughly 4 cups. Gongfu-style tea is brewed in several short rounds, so the set easily serves one to two people.

Does the travel case protect the cups?

Yes. The pieces stack together and fit inside the padded case, which keeps them from knocking against each other in a bag or suitcase.

Before you buy

Before you buy this gaiwan

A gaiwan is one of the most direct Gongfu brewing vessels. It works best if you want clear leaf control, open aroma, and a very readable brew.

Good fit if

You want one neutral vessel for several tea styles and more control over leaf opening and steep timing.

Check

Capacity, wall thickness, bowl shape, lid grip, and whether porcelain, glass, or clay suits your tea habits.

How to use

Start with smaller leaf amounts, hold the lid slightly open, and pour into a fairness pitcher or cups with a steady hand.

Care

Rinse after each session. Porcelain and glazed gaiwans are usually the easiest to keep neutral and clean.
