How to brew with the gaiwan

Add leaves to the gaiwan, pour in hot water and cover. To serve, tilt the lid slightly to hold back the leaves and pour through the gap into the cups. The flared rim stays cooler than the bowl, so hold the gaiwan by the rim and lid knob. The grainy clay surface has a soft, natural feel, and the unglazed foot rings are ground smooth.

What is coarse stoneware?

Coarse pottery (cu tao) is made from a clay body with more sand and iron than fine porcelain. It feels slightly gritty in the hand and has a quiet, earthy look. The bases are left unglazed, which is normal for this style. It is well suited to roasted oolong, dark tea and black tea.

Who it is for

This set serves two to four people. Pack it for the office, a hotel room, a road trip, a picnic or a campsite, or give it as a tea gift to someone who travels often. Bring your own loose leaf tea and hot water.

Care

Rinse every piece with warm water after use and let them dry completely before packing them into the case, so the case stays fresh. Avoid sudden hot-to-cold temperature changes, and hand wash to protect the decoration. Wash with plain water only; soap can be absorbed by the unglazed clay.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use it every day at home?

Yes. The gift box keeps the pieces safe for storage or travel, but the gaiwan and cups are full-size Gongfu pieces for daily use.

How many cups does one brew fill?

The largest vessel holds about 170 ml and each cup about 52 ml, so one brew fills roughly 3 cups. Gongfu-style tea is brewed in several short rounds, so the set easily serves two to four people.

Does the travel case protect the cups?

Yes. The pieces stack together and fit inside the padded case, which keeps them from knocking against each other in a bag or suitcase.

Before you buy

Before you buy this gaiwan

A gaiwan is one of the most direct Gongfu brewing vessels. It works best if you want clear leaf control, open aroma, and a very readable brew.

Good fit if

You want one neutral vessel for several tea styles and more control over leaf opening and steep timing.

Check

Capacity, wall thickness, bowl shape, lid grip, and whether porcelain, glass, or clay suits your tea habits.

How to use

Start with smaller leaf amounts, hold the lid slightly open, and pour into a fairness pitcher or cups with a steady hand.

Care

Rinse after each session. Porcelain and glazed gaiwans are usually the easiest to keep neutral and clean.
