How to brew with the gaiwan

Add leaves to the gaiwan, pour in hot water and cover. To serve, tilt the lid slightly to hold back the leaves and pour through the gap into the cups. The flared rim stays cooler than the bowl, so hold the gaiwan by the rim and lid knob. The teapot has a ball-shaped filter behind the spout, so leaves stay in the pot. Teapot-only and gaiwan-only options are useful as replacements or as a second brewing vessel.

What is falangcai-style decoration?

Falangcai is a Chinese style of colorful, enamel-like painted decoration on porcelain, often with flowers and gold outlines. On this set the colored pattern is fired onto the porcelain surface, giving bright, raised-looking motifs on a white body.

Who it is for

This set serves two to four people. Pack it for the office, a hotel room, a road trip, a picnic or a campsite, or give it as a tea gift to someone who travels often. Bring your own loose leaf tea and hot water.

Care

Rinse every piece with warm water after use and let them dry completely before packing them into the case, so the case stays fresh. Avoid sudden hot-to-cold temperature changes, and hand wash to protect the decoration.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the gaiwan set and the teapot set?

Both include four cups, a tray and a case. The gaiwan is a lidded bowl that is easy to clean and shows the leaves; the teapot has a handle and built-in filter, which is easier for beginners.

How many cups does one brew fill?

The largest vessel holds about 175 ml and each cup about 75 ml, so one brew fills roughly 2 cups. Gongfu-style tea is brewed in several short rounds, so the set easily serves two to four people.

Does the travel case protect the cups?

Yes. The pieces stack together and fit inside the padded case, which keeps them from knocking against each other in a bag or suitcase.

Before you buy

Before you buy this tea tray

A tea tray organizes Gongfu tools, catches rinse water, and makes repeated infusions cleaner and calmer at the table.

Good fit if

You brew Gongfu often, share small cups, or want a neater setup for teapot, pitcher, cups, and tea tools.

Check

Tray size, drainage or reservoir style, material, cleanup effort, and whether there is room for a tea pet or larger sessions.

How to use

Build the session on the tray, guide rinse water onto the surface, and empty or wipe it down after brewing.

Care

Dry it after use, avoid leaving standing water inside, and let bamboo or wood trays air out fully.

Choose a matching pitcher

A useful next piece

Pair this tea tray with a fairness pitcher

A Gong Dao Bei, also called a Cha Hai or fairness pitcher, receives each infusion before you serve the cups. These current pitchers are selected for tea tray setups.
